Chapter 122: Pick Your Roles!
Chapter 122: Pick Your Roles!
The zombies were evolving and Jason was aware that the dangers that waited for them outside the walls were worse than they had anticipated.
He could only pity those who encountered these zombies as the only reason he could survive was because of Chronos.
Chronos was the one thing that granted him the chance at survival and he could only imagine the damage that Sam might have done if Chronos chose him as the host instead of him.
Sam would have been a far better choice and the weight of the responsibility was beginning to weigh on his shoulder.
He was feeling the pressure of things and he couldn’t believe that he managed to survive this long even though it wasn’t on his own.
Jason was tired of being made a fool and Debra probably mistook him as someone who could be walked over, he wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt but something told him this was intentional.
He couldn’t be reckless with his life because if something happened to him, who would protect the girls who were with him?
"I need to step out for a bit," Jason informed the girls.
"We just got here, where is so important that you have to go?" Bella asked Jason.
They rarely spoke since she returned because that atmosphere was still evident.
She did betray him but her saving grace was that she felt guilty about it.
She knew what she did wasn’t right and didn’t even know how she could begin to apologize.
To some, her penance was enough but Bella wasn’t convinced that they had truly forgiven her.
She was right.
Jason turned around but before he could utter a response, the door once again was banged.
"It seems like I have gotten quite popular," Jason teased to which Lillian rolled her eyes in annoyance.
"Get over yourself," Lillian responded but Jason flipped her off with the middle finger.
He opened the door expecting to see Debra because she was the one in charge of him.
"Hey man, you’re looking sharp..." Glenn said awkwardly and Jason was happy to see him.
This was the only person that hasn’t tried to screw him over.
"Hey Glenn, what’s up?" Jason asked, even though the way he spoke to Glenn was casual.
One would think that they have been friends for ages but that was how friendly Glenn was.
"The big boss wants to see you," Glenn said and Jason knew instantly that this was Mariam.
"No, she wants to see you all," Glenn corrected himself and the ladies there looked at him.
"That’s right, we’re yet to pick our roles in this community," Allison recalled.
"Yup, that’s why she wants to see you and Jason, good job man! I like what I have heard so far! You’re killing it!" Glenn exclaimed and Jason scratched the back of his head awkwardly.
"Thanks, man," Jason responded. He had the widest smile on his face which told the ladies present that he wasn’t so good with compliments.
"Mrs Mariam is very impressed. I will say that you all have made an immediate impact. You have no idea how many lives were saved because of you and Debra," Glenn said.
Jason hated the fact that Debra shared in his glory because if he died, then everyone would have been tossed out but he had to act like it didn’t bother him.
"What can I say? It was a result of good leadership!" Jason said sternly but in a playful tone.
They were taken to see Mariam by Glenn and this took a little over seven minutes.
They were all seated right in front of Mariam and she had on different clothes than she did yesterday but it had the same superior aura around it.
The ladies there were envious because her sex appeal was through the roof.
"We meet again..." Mariam began but her demeanor was a lot more friendly.
She recognized Jason as an asset and there was no way she would want him to be displeased because no one has ever made an immediate impact.
Who knows what else this crew was capable of?
"Jason, I want to commend you on your amazing work last night. I know Debra shares in the credit but she spoke about your bravery very highly! That is what we need here in this community," Mariam heaped praises on him.
Jason once again got awkward, smiling like he had just won the lottery.
"Now, down to why you’re all here. Jason is the only one who has picked a role, we need the rest of you to do so," Mariam said.
She gestured for a man standing behind her to give them a piece of paper to fill and he did just that.
Jason guessed that he was her secretary or something but secretaries don’t carry guns,
The door soon opened behind them and It was Carl, he was the reason that they were here.
One could say they owed him a huge gratitude because he had no reason to do this.
Carl didn’t say much and Lillian was the only person that he acknowledged.
Lillian greeted him with a nod of her own and Rachel observed this nonverbal interaction with curiosity.
This boy was closer to her age than most they had encountered and it would do her wonders to have friends her age.
Lillian’s eyes drifted to Jason and Jason misread the interaction he had just witnessed and he winked at Lillian before subtly looking at Carl to let her know that he had seen it.
Lillian’s head immediately turned because she knew if she looked at him any longer, she would laugh.
Jason was becoming the big brother she never had and she liked that she felt safe around him.
They finished filling out their form shortly and handed it to Mariam.
Mariiam went through it and she was rather surprised about the roles that these ladies had filled.
Lillian had volunteered to tend the crops, this was a physically tasking job so she was surprised that someone so little wanted something so tasking.
Mariam wasn’t going to oppose however, they needed all the help that they could get and there was no job that wasn’t important.
Bella and Allison chose to be scouts, these were people who didn’t go outside the wall but rather, tended to the pits and got rid of the zombies within them.
They were also responsible for creating new traps and innovative ideas, this was fitting for both ladies as they knew they had to stay close but this wasn’t what surprised Mariam.
She had to take a double take to make sure her eyes weren’t playing tricks on her.
Rachel would also put Lillian first but she knew that for her to keep Lillian protected, she had to stay close to her but she also had to know what lurked outside these walls.
Rachel chose to tend to the injured, this way she would have access to medicine and gain knowledge on which medicine fought certain diseases.
This would prove invaluable and she knew she wasn’t suited for the world outside even if Jason had decided to go there.
Then it came to Clementine and it was clear that she was the reason for Mariam’s surprise.
"Are you sure about this?" Mariam had to verbally confirm and Clementine nodded.
This made the other curious as to what she had chosen.
Clementine had decided to become a raider alongside Jason because she eavesdropped and heard the discussion that both Jason and Rachel had.
Clementine knew that Debra was dangerous but she had seen this in Sam as well.
Jason was beginning to exhibit similar traits to Sam right before he changed for the worse.
She trusted Rachel with grounding him but something told her that Jason needed to be protected.
She was going to make sure she granted him that protection until he could walk on his own but this included training him to properly fight.
Jason had been getting by and he didn’t need to hone his combat skills because they were fighting zombies but humans could potentially prove to be a problem from what Clementine had seen so far.
She was going to grant Jason everything he needed to protect himself and the girls that were with him. This was her duty and this was what she planned to do before leaving them.
Her parting gift to him but Mariam didn’t understand why a former housewife would want to join the raiders.
She didn’t attempt to dissuade however because she knew that they needed all the bodies they could get even though some of those bodies would serve as decoys.
Mariam instantly saw Clementine as a pawn but little did she know that Clementine was anything but one for she now had a Queen in her possession.
Jason looked at Clementine as he had a peek at what she chose.
"What happened to picking small?" Jason whispered to her.
"I could say I was swayed by your charisma but there is something I need to confirm," Clementine responded but what did she mean by this?
