Chapter 20: The Soul’s Projection? The Unlimited Potential of Skills!

With a soft sound, like the slicing of paper, the shadow beneath the grey rabbit was severed.

It was a genuine severance.

As though it had been split into two independent entities, the cut shadow, guided by an invisible force, was drawn into Lu Yu’s palm.

Meanwhile, the grey rabbit’s feet no longer cast a shadow. It was as if it had transformed into the ghostly creatures of folklore—those who, once dead, were bereft of shadows.

With its shadow stolen, the rabbit’s eyes dimmed, becoming lifeless and vacant. Its body trembled before collapsing inside the cage. The sudden movement startled the other rabbits, which began shifting nervously, their rustling audible in the quiet shop.

The store owner, engrossed in the latest news on his phone, paid little attention. Rabbit scuffles were a common occurrence, and Lu Yu hadn’t done anything conspicuous.

The headlines were dominated by the recent attack in the northern district, where twisted spiders had wrought havoc, leaving scores dead or injured.

Looking at the pixelated, grotesque images, the shopkeeper couldn’t help but sigh in relief that he lived in the eastern district. Otherwise, he might have ended up as one of those blurry photos himself.

“Maybe I’ll celebrate tonight by roasting a rabbit,” he mused.

Lu Yu continued observing the grey rabbit. Its lifeless eyes remained dull, its body visibly shrivelling before it slowly closed its eyes, its life extinguished.

The shadow in Lu Yu’s hand, however, grew lively as soon as the rabbit died. Under his mental command, it morphed into the shape of an arm.

“Stealing the shadow... does it take life along with it? No, that’s not quite right—it seizes the soul, or perhaps its essence, leading to sudden death and a collapse of vitality.”

By his calculations, the cage contained thirteen rabbits, including the now-dead grey one. Their shadows would be enough to create a single shadow servant.

He also wanted to test whether the shadow servant’s characteristics varied depending on the source creature. Comparisons required experimentation.

Hearing that a customer wanted an entire cage of rabbits, the shopkeeper leapt to his feet excitedly—only to bang his shin against the corner of the counter. His face contorted in pain.

“Ouch, ouch, ouch...”

After muttering a few curses under his breath, he forced a smile and said, “Thirteen rabbits in total. Normally, it’s 1,300 yuan, but for you, 1,200.”

At nearly 100 yuan per rabbit—and not even breeding females—Lu Yu thought the price was steep, especially since they might be farmed.

Still, he didn’t haggle, paying promptly. Although the grey rabbit’s death was subtle, closer inspection might reveal abnormalities.

To bolster his research, Lu Yu also requested some mice and birds, citing experimentation as his reason. The shopkeeper was thrilled, knowing he could profit handsomely from these “add-ons.”

The birds were the most expensive, priced at 200 yuan each. Lu Yu bought twenty. Mice, being smaller with weaker shadows, were cheaper; he purchased fifty.

By the end, he had spent over 7,000 yuan. The shopkeeper, grinning ear to ear, offered delivery services, which Lu Yu readily accepted. After all, transporting so many animals himself would be cumbersome, and most drivers would refuse the job due to the smell.

Returning home, Lu Yu locked all the doors and windows before arranging the animals in neat rows.

Drawing from his earlier experience, he methodically severed the shadows from each creature.

As their shadows were taken, the animals became sluggish, their life forces ebbing away until silence filled the once-clamorous room.

Three large, ink-like shadow masses hovered in the air, pulsating and shifting...
