Chapter 51 Cruel Thoughts
Chapter 51 Cruel Thoughts
"I can shroud you from sight for a time," the woman in black said, her voice smooth yet edged with warning. "But the moment you approach that knife, the concealment will falter. His aura is bound to it—he'll sense you."
Ivaim gave a confident nod, his grin sharp but measured.
"As long as it's not a perfect death trap or some inescapable ambush, I'll manage. Survival's kind of my specialty." He rolled his shoulders, his demeanor relaxed despite the gravity of the situation.
Nathan, who had been observing quietly, stepped forward. His cold, calculating gaze shifted between the woman and Ivaim.
"I'll do what I can," he said, his tone clipped and deliberate. "If he strikes, I'll make sure there's still a chance for you to evade. No guarantees, but I'll try to tip the odds in your favor."
Reves stood off to the side, hands clenched tightly as he watched the others. Though frustration churned within him, he knew his limits. Right now, all he could do was bear witness and hope his presence mattered, however small.
RUMBLE.
The ground shuddered violently, cracks snaking through the chamber floor as the Master of Cruelty's power manifested fully.
Ethereal chains erupted upward, writhing like vipers, their metallic hum filling the air. They lashed and snapped, seeking the faint traces of the hidden veil that shielded the group.
The Black Veil Master stood at the center of the protective shroud, her hands raised as she directed streams of shadowy energy to weave a barrier around herself, Nathan, and Reves.
Her dark, hooded figure exuded an ancient, commanding presence as she turned to Ivaim.
"You won't stay hidden for long," she said, her voice low and smooth. "The veil will weaken as you near the knife. Move quickly, and I will do what I can to disrupt him."
Ivaim nodded, his jaw set. "That's all I need."
With a flick of her wrist, shadows wrapped around Ivaim, turning his form incorporeal. A shiver ran through him as he activated [Coin of Fortune].
The Master of Cruelty reacted to her interference with terrifying precision. Chains surged upward in a twisting vortex, activating [Crushing Embrace].
The metal closed in from all sides, threatening to crush both Nathan and the Veil Master's shadow constructs.
Nathan gritted his teeth, thrusting both arms forward as a massive wall of steel erupted from the ground. The wall shuddered under the crushing force but held, giving Ivaim just enough time to press forward.
The crimson knife loomed closer now, its glow pulsing as though alive. Ivaim focused, his breathing sharp and uneven. A chain lashed toward him, but a burst of shadow intercepted it, the Veil Master's tendrils pulling the chain off-course.
Another chain streaked toward Ivaim, faster and heavier than the last. Nathan hurled a newly-formed [Steel Spear], the weapon slamming into the chain with an ear-splitting clang.
"Now, Ivaim! Take it!"
With a final push, Ivaim leapt forward, [Lucky Leap] propelling him over a collapsing section of floor. His fingers closed around the hilt of the knife, its crimson glow flaring violently. He wrenched it free with a sharp tug, and the entire chamber seemed to shudder in response.
The Master of Cruelty rose from its throne. Its form towered over the battlefield, a grotesque silhouette of malice. Chains surged from every direction, crackling with the energy of [Cruelty's Grasp], their sheer force ripping through the chamber walls.
Nathan staggered back, sweat dripping down his face. His breathing was heavy, and his metal defenses began to crack under the pressure of the Master of Cruelty's relentless chains. The metallic walls he had raised groaned, barely holding against the attacks.
The Black Veil Master stood nearby, her shadows twisting and curling to help. They wrapped around Nathan's failing constructs, trying to strengthen them. But even her power wasn't enough to stop the onslaught.
Ahead, Ivaim ran toward the glowing crimson knife, his heart racing. Just as his hand stretched out to grab it, a strange feeling hit him like a punch in the chest.
Doubt.
The thought came from nowhere, dark and sharp. He froze mid-step, his fingers hovering inches from the knife. His mind filled with a sudden urge—a cruel whisper that didn't sound like his own.
'What if I stopped and just betrayed them?'
