Chapter 115: The Show
Chapter 115: The Show
Athena sat by the window of her villa, sipping on a warm cup of tea, when her optical brain suddenly vibrated.
She glanced at the screen and saw that it was her agent calling. With a sigh, she accepted the call, already expecting some kind of ridiculous work proposal.
"Athena, I have something big for you," her agent’s voice crackled through the line, filled with excitement.
"You’ve been invited to participate in a variety show. And not just any show, Wild Survival Chronicles: Galactic Frontier Edition."
Athena almost dropped her cup. Her fingers tightened around the handle as memories of her last life surged through her mind.
That same survival show where she had pushed herself to the limit, surviving against all odds.
It was the same show that had tested her mental and physical strength, proving to the world that she wasn’t just a pretty face.
For a moment, she considered refusing. However, before she could voice her thoughts, her agent continued, "The twist this time is that you’ll be partnered with none other than Mors."
That made her pause. "Mors?"
"Yes," her agent confirmed.
"And get this... the location isn’t just some controlled environment. It’s at the actual frontline of the border that Major General Mors defends in Sinalta. Zerg-infested lands, real danger, real survival. They’re taking the show to a whole new level."
Athena took a slow breath. The frontline of the border where zergs lurked.
These weren’t the lower-level creatures she had fought before, some of them had evolved to the point of reaching level eight, capable of not only strategy but speech.
These monsters were the very embodiment of destruction. The very idea of facing them again made her blood stir with an unsettling mix of excitement and apprehension.
She exhaled. "When do we leave?"
A week later, Athena stood at the launch bay, her gear strapped securely around her body as the countdown for departure began.
Across from her, Mors was already in his battle uniform, his black hair tied back, exuding his usual unshakable confidence.
When he met her gaze, a smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. "Ready for round two?"
Athena rolled her eyes. "You’re acting like I lost last time."
The zerg snarled, lunging toward them with blinding speed.
Athena barely had time to react before Mors grabbed her waist and twisted it out of harm’s way.
The zerg’s claws slashed through the air where she had been standing just seconds before.
Mors’ blade shot forward, piercing through the creature’s torso. It let out a guttural scream, its body convulsing before going still.
The remaining zergs hesitated for a moment before retreating into the shadows.
Silence fell.
Athena let out a slow breath, stepping away from Mors. "You didn’t have to grab me."
Mors smirked, wiping the black blood from his blade. "I was just making sure you didn’t embarrass yourself on a live broadcast."
Athena huffed, shoving his arm. "Shut up."
The first day of the survival challenge was over, but they both knew this was just the beginning.
As the battlefield fell into silence, the distant echoes of retreating zergs faded into the night. Athena took a deep breath, her heartbeat finally slowing.
The scent of burnt flesh and metallic blood still lingered in the air, a stark reminder of the battle they had just won.
The floating cameras continued to record, but for a brief moment, Athena forgot about the show.
Her gaze flickered to Mors, who was casually wiping his blade against his sleeve, as if he hadn’t just faced down a level-eight zerg.
She rolled her shoulders, wincing slightly at the dull ache settling in. "Next time, let me handle myself," she muttered.
Mors smirked. "Next time, don’t get distracted by a talking bug."
Athena scoffed and turned away, but she could still hear the amused chuckle under his breath.
Their comms buzzed to life. "This is Command. The first wave has been repelled, but expect another attack before sunrise. Find a secure location to regroup."
Athena exchanged glances with Mors. This was just the beginning. The real survival challenge had yet to begin, and the borderlands were far from safe.
With a deep breath, she reloaded her weapon. Let them come.
