Chapter 78 The Parasitic Evergrower? (edited)

Chapter 78 The Parasitic Evergrower? (edited)

She couldn't believe it. She had actually managed to gain another Shard? Well, wasn't she quite lucky?

'What are the chances again...? A one in twenty-five chance for me to get it?' Lillian grinned and was about to look into it. That was until she noticed a shadow looming over her.

Lillian twisted her head around and saw Marionette staring down at her.

"Are you done?"

"H-huh? Oh yeah I am—"

Before being able to finish her sentence, Marionette dragged her out of the way again, dodging as a few lines of roots shot through where they were previously.

Lillian gave a sigh of relief and thanked her.

Marionette nodded briefly, "It's fine. Pay attention to what is going to happen."

Lillian tilted her head and stared at the corpse of the Beetle being tightly wrapped in the Parasitic Tree's roots before being dragged towards it by an even thicker root.

A trail of the Beetle's blood was left smearing against the ground as it was ruthlessly dragged.

The Parasitic Tree then opened the maw of the Beetle like a cruel puppeteer and held the face of the dead Beetle towards it.

CRACK... CRUNCH!

It forcefully bit down on the horn, cracking and snapping it in half before devouring it. It then moved on to the rest of it and did the face thing.

Lillian watched the gruesome sight of what may be called cannibalism with a disturbed look but then remembered what she had just done earlier.

'Was me filling it with water considered gruesome?' she thought for a bit before deciding otherwise, 'Nah... it broke my arms. I think it was a valid thing to do.'

Yawn...

Lillian's ears twitched at the sound of Marionette yawning, which was a first.

"Are you tired, Marionette? Do you want me to lull~ you to sleep?" She asked, grinning playfully.

Marionette glanced at her with a raised eyebrow, "We are about to fight the Boss. And you want me asleep? Do you perhaps want to sleep with me that badly?"

Lillian widened her eyes, "H-how the hell did you come to that conclusion!?"

Marionette narrowed her eyes before responding.

"Hm? Is there something wrong with what I said? Or did you think of something entirely inappropriate?"

Lillian blushed a bit before coughing into her fist.

"O-of course not... Anyway!" she decided to change the awkward topic, "How sure are you that this thing is actually going to be the—"

Lillian stiffened as a sudden burst of mana washed over the area.

She then sighed, 'Why do I even open my mouth...' before turning her head towards the Parasitic Tree to find it had already finished.

Blood was childish across its throbbing face as it twitched.

It twitched, and it twitched.

Its head twisted side to side rapidly, flicking the blood on its face.

It then paused before collapsing on its legs.

THUD...

Its dehydrated body, which was already a husk, became more shrivelled.

Its black carapace and teeth suddenly cracked as more roots accommodated the made gaps.

While the Beetle was going through a change, so was the stump sitting on its back.

The thick roots that stretched out from it pulsated, transferring whatever nutrients gained from the Beetle into it like thick wooden arteries.

This caused the stump to undergo a healing period as a sapling sprouted from the top, growing rapidly before the two women's eyes.

"So? It's nothing special..." Marionette stated, taking a step forward before stopping.

She then turned back and stared at Lillian before smirking.

"Nothing special, unlike you, Lillian."

"H-huh!? Y-you can't just suddenly flirt with me like that!" Lillian stammered, covering her face and turning away.

Marionette raised an eyebrow at this.

"But... didn't you just flirt with—"

"O-oh, whatever!" Lillian sighed and then asked, "How do you even plan on taking it down anyway?"

"Isn't it obvious? I am going to use an Item."

"Eh?"

Lillian turned back around and saw Marionette with a long, thorny metallic pole.

It had a dark green body with runic inscriptions etched into its surface.

It was around a metre or so long and covered in spikes.

Other than the spikes and inscriptions, the only other thing that made it stand out was the green bulb at one of its ends.

Besides that, it looked like a deadly javelin.

Marionette stared with a sentimental and solemn gaze.

Lillian stared with wide eyes. She recognised this item.

'Could it be the—'

"The Pin of the Roselle's. A congratulatory item for those who had passed their first Trial in my family."

Marionette inspected its design.

"A sort of tradition in our family, you could say. And one of the many things my family is known for."

She stared at Lillian, "I assume you know a rough outline of what it could do?"

Lillian nodded with a serious expression.

Marionette nodded in satisfaction, "Then I won't have to explain what it can do even though I wasn't. Until, of course, you eventually accept one of my future offers." she said in a foreboding tone.

Something Lillian ignored entirely as she intently looked through her memories about the congratulatory item in Marionette's hand.

'The Pin of the Roselle...'

Marionette stepped forward, brandishing the javelin in her right hand.

After planting her feet into the ground, she pushed her left foot back.

She then opened her mouth and began to spill and chant.

"From one hundred petals on the first. Ninety petals on the second. Eighty petals on the third..."

Each line spoken caused a crimson light to erupt from the runes that grew brighter.

'A notorious item used by the Villainess in the early stages of the game against the Heroine if the player chose the wrong options...'

"... Thirty petals on the eighth. Twenty petals on the ninth. And eventually plucked down to one on the tenth..."

'It was most famous for its ability...'

With a large twist of her body and a pull of her arm, she launched the javelin out of her hand.

The Pin of the Roselle shot through the air, seemingly doubling in speed every few seconds, aiming for Morbasker's large eye.

'Of killing you with a near one hundred per cent accuracy.'
